Noel Gallagher said about the origin of this song to NME in 1996, "It's about my girlfriend, Meg Matthews." After he divorced Matthews in 2001 he said, that the song was "about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself".

The title of this song was derived from the film "Wonderwall" (1968). George Harrison wrote the soundtrack for it named "Wonderwall Music" (1968).

Ryan Adams made a cover version of this song on his "Love Is Hell Pt. 1 EP" (2003). That cover was well received by Noel Gallagher who said, "I think Ryan Adams is the only person who ever got that song right."

This song was the band's first single in the USA, and it became their biggest hit there.
